Product Engineer (Ruby, Rails, Typescript) at Scan.com
- Full-time
- Hybrid, London, United Kingdom
- £65,000 - £75,000
We’re Scan.com, the digital health scale-up making diagnostics accessible, fast, and transparent. Our technology speeds up diagnoses for timely treatments, improving healthcare outcomes for hundreds of patients each day.
We’re doing diagnostics differently, with a portfolio of brands tailored to both patients and providers, all backed by our world-class customer operations team. Our B2C marketplace simplifies booking a scan, making it as straightforward for patients as booking a hotel. Our B2B platforms provide live scheduling at the point of care and harness AI to ease workflows for physicians, attorneys, and providers.
We’re looking for a Product Engineer at an exciting time - our B2B platform is expanding rapidly across insurance, medicolegal and consultant verticals, we’re now offering 10+ modalities, and working with 200+ UK imaging centres. We’ve raised a total of $70m in VC funding, reached profitability, and have a 100%+ yearly growth trajectory.
WHAT YOU WILL BE GETTING INVOLVED IN:
You’ll be joining the UK Engineering team, working across the full product lifecycle, with real ownership and influence. You’ll report to the Engineering Manager, who leads the team.
As an early-stage business, you can expect your role to develop over time. Here are some of the types of things you could be getting involved in:
Owning product development projects end-to-end: from problem discovery and collaborative solution design, through to implementation, launch, and iteration based on user feedback
Integrating effectively with the Growth, Partnerships and Operations teams when working on projects with them, understanding the challenges and opportunities they are facing
Building relationships across the Design, Product, Data, and Finance teams, too, to support your delivery of high-quality work that solves business problems
Consistently improving your understanding of patient and partner needs, pain points, and context, and translating that into thoughtful technical solutions
Building, shipping, and iterating quickly, balancing speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
Making pragmatic technical decisions and trade-offs in the service of customer and business value as you contribute to our Ruby on Rails application codebases
Using data, metrics, and qualitative feedback to evaluate whether the feature we shipped is actually working for our patients, partners and internal teams
Improving our codebase, tooling, and processes so the team can move faster and more safely over time
Contributing to a strong engineering culture by sharing knowledge, giving constructive feedback, and helping others succeed
This role is hands-on, collaborative, and impact-driven. You’ll be expected to play offence, spotting opportunities as well as responding to requests.
THE TOP 5 THINGS WE WANT YOU TO ACHIEVE IN YOUR FIRST YEAR ARE:
You’ve taken clear ownership of meaningful parts of the product
You can point to features or systems you’ve led end-to-end, and explain the customer problem they solved, the trade-offs you made, and the impact they had.You consistently build with customer value in mind
You demonstrate strong product judgement: asking “why”, challenging assumptions, and keeping user needs front and centre in technical decisions. You ship, learn, and iterate effectively
You favour progress over perfection, ship early when appropriate, and use feedback and data to refine your work rather than defending first attempts. You’re a trusted, collaborative teammate
You communicate clearly, challenge directly but respectfully, and contribute to an environment where people feel supported and accountable. You’re growing and helping others grow at the same time
You actively seek feedback, expand your understanding of the business and domain, share what you learn, and avoid becoming a single point of failure.
WHAT YOU MIGHT BRING TO THE TABLE:
You don't need to tick all the boxes to apply for this role. Whether it's your first role or your fifth role, we believe everyone can add value, learn, and grow. However, these might be some of the ways you are currently adding value:
- Experience building and shipping software in a production environment, with a focus on solving real problems for people using Ruby, JavaScript/Typescript, and the Ruby on Rails framework
- A product mindset: curiosity about the people using the software you create, comfort with ambiguity, and a desire to understand the “why”, not just the “what”
- Strong fundamentals in software engineering, with an appreciation for code quality, testing, and maintainability
- Comfort making trade-offs between speed, scope, and technical complexity
- A bias for action: you move things forward, take responsibility, and don’t get stuck in analysis paralysis
- Clear, direct communication, and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback
- A growth mindset: you’re curious, reflective, and willing to unlearn approaches that no longer serve the team or the product
We value potential, judgement, and alignment with our values as much as (if not more than) specific tools or technologies.
